Welcome Back to the New Year for the Day Surgery Special Interest Group.

I hope this newsletter finds you safe and well and that you were able to enjoy time with family and friends over the Christmas/New Year period.

The Grand Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne hosted theAustralasian Day Surgery Conference in November. The conference was very well attended by Day Surgery nurses from both Australia and overseas. Feedback was very positive and the conference was deemed an incredible success. The book, Day Surgery: Development and Practice, as well as the newly released Pain Management Best Practice Guidelines that were for sale at the ADSNA stand sold at a very fast pace. There are still some copies of the book available if you were not able to purchase it at the Conference. It is offered to ADSNA members at a discounted price. Log onto www.adsna.info and follow the link to download an order form.

2007 is shaping up to be another busy and exciting year for DSSIG. The committee will be meeting in February to begin planning our Annual Conference. This year will be our 10th Annual State Conference and will once again be back at Moonee Valley Racecourse by popular demand. We hope to put a few surprises together for you as we plan for this milestone. Look out for an advance flyer with all the details in your mailboxes shortly.

You will have received the 2007 calendar with this newsletter and you can see we have a varied program, with Twilight Meetings and Combined Groups Seminars throughout the year. As usual we have varied the venues and locations to try and allow as many of you to attend as possible. We are still waiting on confirmation of our Combined Groups Seminar for October, but we will notify you as soon as this is arranged.

We have a number of DSSIG members heading off to Amsterdam in April, so this will be exciting for them and we await their feedback.

I look forward to continuing to meet you all at our meetings through out the year. Please come along, enjoy and continue to introduce yourselves.

Hello everyone!
The committee have been busy this year organizing our 9th Annual Conference back at Moonee Valley again by popular demand. We have also been putting our energies towards getting our Research Project focusing on Pre-Admission in Day Surgery up and running again. We have secured a pilot site and hope to be able to present you with some of the outcomes in the near future.

Conference Registration
Reminder that the Conference is this month. Yes, the year has flown by and it is that time again. Our chosen topic this year is Paeds – Paediatrics, Achievable, Enjoyable, Demystified, Survivable. We have focused on nurses who do not nurse children everyday and who often feel overwhelmed when the paediatric list is on. If you have lost your brochure log onto the website and follow the Victorian page link to refresh yourself (www.adsna.info). There is a registration form included with this newsletter for you if the first one has been misplaced . We decided to deliver a half day event this year, which enables us to keep the cost down, so that all Victorian Day Surgery nurses will also be able attend the upcoming Australasian Day Surgery Conference, in November, to be held in Melbourne.

AGM
The AGM will held in conjunction with the August Twilight Education session at Peter Mac. We have included a flyer with this newsletter for you to put the date, August 15th, into your diary. The Committee for 2006 -2007 will be elected at the AGM.

Nominations for Committee
If you are interested in getting involved in Day Surgery at a higher level, you might like to consider nominating for the DSSIG Committee. The DSSIG committee is a dynamic and highly motivated group with many of its committee being in positions to shape Day Surgery in Victoria and Australia for the future. The committee meets 10 times per year and takes responsibility for organizing the education calendar for the year, including our Twilight Education Sessions and Combined Group Seminars. We totally plan and organize our Annual State Conference and our members are often asked to speak at other medical and nursing groups’ conferences at a state, national and international level. The networking opportunities and additional resources that become available due to your increased exposure to all things Day Surgery are invaluable. If you would like to discuss this further please feel free to call or email me on the details below.

Look forward to seeing you all at the conference!!

Conference Newsletter February 2006 (PDF version 24kb)

The organization for DSSIG activities in 2006 are well under way. We have inserted the flyer for our next Twilight Education Session which is to be held at Como Private Hospital on Tuesday May 9th, 2006. We encourage you all to attend and meet with your colleagues in the day surgery industry.

The DSSIG Committee is excited to be presenting a Paediatric focused Conference this year. In doing so, we are hoping to ease some of the stresses that many adult Day Surgery nurses experience, when paedatric patients are on their lists. We will be covering a number of topics including paediatric emergencies, the basics of incorporating paediatrics into adult centres, paediatric anaesthetics and what stresses children and parents face when they are booked for surgery. We have already managed to secure some great speakers for you.

You will find a preliminary flyer with this letter and a conference brochure and registration form will follow shortly. This year, we decided to have a ½ day State Conference, as the Australasian Day Surgery Conference is being held, in Melbourne, in November. A ½ day conference allows us to keep costs down, which should allow many of you to put some money towards this additional educational experience, not normally offered.

The Australasian Day Surgery Conference will be a two day event, held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne on Friday November 10th and Saturday November 11th.

We will be giving away two Registrations to the Australasian Day Surgery Conference at our State Conference. These are valued at $395 each. And, of course, there will also be the usual donation of prizes by our loyal Trade for giveaway.

DSSIG is in the process of applying for CNE points for our State Conference. This is an exciting and progressive development as many of our centres are already using a points system as part of our appraisal process.

We are also delighted to be able to release the next set of Best Practice Guidelines for Paediatrics at our State Conference. This is the first time they will have become available and are the result of many hours of dedicated work by ADSNA. They will be available for purchase at a special price at the Conference, which will be a valuable addition to your Day Surgery Best Practice Guidelines.

This will also be followed by the August edition of Day Surgery Australia having a paediatric focus. By the end of this year, we should all be feeling much more confident when we have children attending our centres.

If you have not received or misplaced your calendar with the remainder of our activities for this year, it can be accessed via the website www.adsna.info and following the Victorian link.

Looking forward to catching up with you all through out the year.
