June 2005 (PDF
version 18kb)
Hello everyone,
and welcome to another update newsletter.
The website.
www.adsna.info has been updated with a report from the conference
in Spain. (Click here
to view it.) Many of our committee and members attended and
presented at the conference. There will be a more comprehensive
report with more photos in the journal which is due in July.
Wendy Adams
(with her ADSNA President hat on) has just returned from Brisbane
where she was involved in the selection panel for the conference
organiser for the International conference that will be hosted by
Australia in 2009. She is very excited about what Australia will
be able to offer the rest of the world and encourages us all to
hang in there as day surgery nurses & be part of an amazing
event!!
Our conference
is almost here and so is the end of the financial year. We would
like to remind you that if you send your registration and membership
form in before June 30th, you will be able to claim it on this year’s
tax!!
For your convenience,
we have included another registration form for you or your colleagues
at work.
Once again,
we are overwhelmed with the number of trade who are willing to support
us. This is certainly an indication of how highly we, as day surgery
nurses are regarded.
As the shortest
day of the year passes, we hope this finds you all well and looking
forward to seeing you at the Conference.

Hello
everyone, and welcome to another update newsletter.
As
you will have already seen, there is a brochure for our 8th Annual
DSSIG Conference on July 23rd available to you with this newsletter.
Once again we will be meeting at Moonee Valley Racecourse and it
will be an all day event. The committee has been working hard to
ensure an informative and enjoyable day will be available. We have
utilised feedback from last year’s conference to ensure that
speakers and topics are reflective of our member needs.
The
updated Best Practice Guidelines are now finalised and ready for
purchase. Updated order forms will be available on the website (www.adsna.info
& follow the Guidelines link). The Patient Education guidelines
are new and the Patient Discharge has been revised with no changes
being necessary. Once again well done to the ADSNA committee who
have been working very hard to enable these to be up-to-date and
relevant to our centers, and of course our patients.
We
were treated to an entertaining and informative twilight session
at Bellbird Private Hospital on Tuesday, 10th May. We had nearly
60 members present on the night and Miss Jai Kesari (Plastic and
Reconstructive Cosmetic and Hand Surgery) gave a presentation with
some fabulous slides displaying before and after pictures of her
work. She emphasized the importance of teamwork in the successful
outcome of plastic surgery. Many of us who attended on the night
were able to take back to our units many suggestions for better
patient care of our plastics patients. A big thank-you, to Debbie
Graetz and staff from Bellbird Private Hospital, for organizing
a very successful evening.
I
hope to see many of you at the Conference.

Welcome Back
to the New Year of Day Surgery Special Interest Group.
I hope to find you safe and well after the holiday
period. I was fortunate enough to have five weeks off over the Christmas/January
period and have returned to work refreshed, relaxed and tanned,
ready to tackle the year.
We have an exciting year ahead for day surgery education.
The calendar is enclosed for you to start putting dates in your
diary. The first Combined Groups Seminar with VPNG and VSPAAN is
set for March at St Vincent’s with the country meeting out
west in Colac later in the year. Information flyer will be out shortly
for St Vincent’s. Our first twilight education meeting is
set for May at Bellbird Private Hospital.
The International Conference in Seville, Spain,
is shaping up to be big this April with our own Wendy Adams invited
to present a paper.
We begin planning for our annual conference in July
this month, so keep your eyes peeled for an advanced flyer shortly.
I hope to be able to continue to meet you all at
our meetings through out the year. Please continue to introduce
yourselves.

Hello and welcome
to another update newsletter! Although you have only just received
your journal there are things we need to let you know about!
The Annual General
Meeting was held on Monday 11th August at the Epworth Day Surgery
Unit. Natalie Anderson, a CNS from Epworth, gave us a fantastic
presentation on the Endometriosis research that the staff at Epworth’s
DSU have been involved with and we thank Natalie for the time and
effort she put into her presentation. We also elected the new committee
for the next 12 months. Neridah Creedon and Robyn Kennedy both “retired”
from the committee at this AGM. They have been involved with the
committee in various roles since 1997.They have both worked tirelessly
and have contributed more than can be put in words here! We will
all miss them and they have left big shoes to fill. We will be making
a presentation to both Neridah and Robyn at the Twilight meeting
in November, we hope you can join us to thank them! We also welcome
the new committee members, Gill Brown, Glenda Langford and Priscilla
Guy! My President’s report is on our member page on the web
site www.adsna.info

2003
Hello
and welcome to 2003! On behalf of the committee I would like to
wish you all a happy and safe new year.
Our
first seminar for the year is on Saturday March 15th at the Alfred
hospital. This is a combined group's seminar with VPNG & VSPAAN.
Please register early when you receive your flyers as we can only
take 200 registrants. That may sound a lot but almost 50 people
were turned away last time! The topics will be comprehensive and
their will be a focus on Burns and Trauma management in the OR,
these presentations will be given by Alfred staff who managed many
of the Bali Victims and will give us a great insight into their
roles late last year. I look forward to seeing you there!
The
article explaining the research results will be in the next journal
as we are still working on the staffing results - you will not be
surprised to know that it has proven to be a very political and
tricky issue to tackle - the guidelines will be available soon.
Stay tunned to the website to keep up to date with what's happening
with both the research and guidelines and Day Surgery in Australia……..www.adsna.info
The
committee will be starting off the year working on trying to secure
funding for further research. If anyone has any contacts or a money
tree please do not hesitate in contacting us!!
The
2003 Annual State Conference will be held on Saturday July 19th
- put the date in your diary as it is shaping up to be the best
yet. It will be at Moonee Valley again and we are looking forward
to seeing you all there Please be reminded that the Annual Membership
fee is $55 - we have recently received membership applications on
forms that are over 3 years old.
Please
throw out any old forms that may be lying around the tearooms and
email me (michellecairns4@bigpond.com)
or visit the website to get copies of the new membership application
form .
We
have received a "call for abstracts" for the International Ambulatory
Surgery Conference in Boston in May. Abstracts and information can
be found at www.iaascongress.org.
Please be quick if you are wishing to present as we only received
this over the Christmas break and abstract submissions close on
Feb 7th. We apologise for the limited information that has been
available, however, little has been supplied from the American organisers
and the Australian Day Surgery Council has put in an official complaint
in regard to the advertising and information surrounding this conference.

5TH
Annual Conference - "Moving down the track…….keeping ahead of the
field"
August
24th saw over 200 delegates attend the annual conference. The day
was a resounding success. The quality of speakers and fantastic
trade display was commented on by many of the delegates. We are
pleased to report that over 80 new members joined the group at the
onference, we would like to welcome each and every one of them!
Many delegates have asked about copies of the presentations given
- please visit the website www.adsna.info
where we have posted many of them or email me on michellecairns4@bigpond.com
as most speakers are happy for us to send you their presentations
from the day.
I would like to thank all the delegates who made the effort to attend
- I'm sure you'll agree - It was well worth it!
I would also like to thank the committee, especially Trish Cashman,
for the amazing effort that went into organising such a day!
Annual
Subscriptions
Thank you to all the members who have paid their annual subscriptions!
There are still some members who have not renewed yet.
If you have a pink renewal notice included with this newsletter
you have not renewed
and your name will have to be removed from the membership list at
the end of September! With so much happening in Day Surgery and
the new look journal can you afford not to be a member?? - no!!
So please fill in the form and send your renewal remittance to

Combined Groups Seminar
Don't forget to register for the Combined Groups Seminar on October
12th in Castlemaine. It is shaping up to be a great day and the
staff at Castlemaine have put a lot of effort into organising the
day - we'd love to see you there!
For more information about this seminar or to register- contact
Judy Golomb on 98954648
Twilight
Seminar and Christmas Party
Don't forget to mark Tuesday November 19TH in your diaries! We are
currently finalising the venue and it will be a great night. It
will be between 7-9pm and as well as a speaker and a tour of the
unit we will be adding some Christmas Cheer!
So get ready to come along with a twist of tinsel and catch up with
your Day Surgery Colleagues before the silly season really gets
underway! A flyer will be out to you shortly!
Credit
Card Facilities
Well our decision to go ahead with Credit Card facilities has been
a hit! We have had an overwhelming response using this method of
payment for both the renewal of memberships and the conference.
Some members had queried their credit card statements as they read
"Wantirna day surgery" - this was due to the way the bank had set
up the details.
We have changed the details as best we can and "DSSIG" will appear
on your statements as part of the description from now on. We apologise
for any inconvenience this may have caused and hope the new title
will make things a bit clearer. I think we are now off our credit
card L plates!
Boston
2003
Have you started planning for the 5th International Congress on
Ambulatory Surgery?? It's in Boston, Massachusetts, USA from May
8 - 11, 2003. For more details visit www.fasa.org
or www.sambahq.org It would
be great to see as many Australians there as there were in Geneva
in 2001 |

2002
Welcome to the
winter update! There has been a lot happening since the last newsletter
and there is a lot more about to happen - so read on!
5th Australasian
Day Surgery Conference - "Expanding the scope of Day Surgery" -
July 5th-7th, Gold Coast, QLD.
As you read this newsletter, many Victorians will be heading
north for the Australasian Conference. Victoria is well represented
with members speaking, chairing sessions, Show casing their units
and of course, the committee will be at the ADSNA stand with the
other state member bodies - so please come up and say hello! There
will be comprehensive reports in the next journal for those who
have not been able to attend this time.
WEBPAGE
The National ADSNA web site will be officially launched at the Australasian
Conference, the web site address is www.adsna.info You will be able
to access information on all the latest ADSNA information and also
Victorian specific information and forms. Click on and see for yourself!
MEMBERSHIP
RENEWALS
It's that time of year again - all membership renewals are due in
August. Your membership renewal form is included in this mailout.
WE NOW HAVE CREDIT CARD FACILITIES FOR ALL DSSIG PAYMENTS!!! The
committee has put a lot of time and effort into researching and
establishing credit card facilities for our members and we have
been able to keep the establishment and ongoing costs of these facilities
as low as possible. However to cover the ongoing costs we are increasing
the annual fees by $5. This will ensure members can use their credit
cards for any DSSIG payment and we will be able to continue offering
free education sessions 4 times per year as well as the conferences.
Please read about the conference costs as we are offering a big
discount if you pay for the conference and renew your membership
at the same time - this will save you $15! (ie. in effect you won't
ever have to pay this if you come to the conference!)
This year you
will also be receiving a membership card with your membership receipt.
This will enable you to easily identify yourself as a current financial
member. The membership form has also been updated so please remind
any friends or colleagues who have let their membership lapse to
grab a membership form and rejoin!
TWILIGHT
SEMINAR - LINLEY CLINIC
A very successful twilight seminar was held on May 7th, 50 members
and committee attended the evening and after an excellent presentation
on BCC's and SCC's we all went home checking out our freckles and
spots! Thanks to the staff of Linley Clinic for their contribution
& hospitality!
THE NEW LOOK
JOURNAL
You will have all received the new look journal and what an improvement!
We hope you agree that it's been worth the wait! Now that all the
systems are set up, the journals will be back to normal. They are
now posted from the publisher so you will receive your other DSSIG
information separately from now on.
Thanks to Marion
Sheehan - our first member to contribute an article to the new journal!
We really need articles coming in all the time, the committee is
happy to help you "polish" articles off if that helps! Remember
the last journal had an article on how to write articles - so have
a go! If you are currently a student with the Deakin course - all
you have to do is turn one of your assignments into an article -
you have already done the hard work! The committee is working on
"creative" prizes for articles contributed!
5th STATE
DSSIG ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Included in this mailout is your official conference brochure. Please
feel free to photocopy the registration forms, and remember - if
you run out, they are available on the web site! We look forward
to seeing as many of you there as possible, the program is packed
and the trade display is shaping up to be the best ever! The concurrent
sessions will offer you the choice of management and clinical presentations
and discussions as well as the plenary sessions with useful and
challenging information for everyone! The trade display will be
in the "betting ring" and you will have plenty of time throughout
the day to talk to all the representatives, find out about the latest
products and maybe even win their competitions! For any conference
information - call Trish Cashman on 9791 2299
The AGM will
be held at the conference, nomination forms for committee membership
are included in this mailout, if you would like to find out more
about being on the committee, please call Michelle Cairns on 0414
440 422!
Keep safe and
happy

Hello again,
Welcome to our new look, colour letter head!
The Journal
is having a "Face Lift" and is due out soon. I would love your feedback
when you receive it and as always, I would love articles.
Our National Web Site should also be on line soon. When you log

DSSIG news.
Great to see
so many of you at the Combined Groups Seminar at Monash last week.
Yet again, another popular and successful Combined Groups Seminar
with the next one in Castlemaine in October.
Our Twilight
Education Session on May 7th is at Linley Clinic (formerly Bryson
Private Hospital). Hope to see as many of you as possible.
Now, for our
State Conference: Our venue is Moonee Valley and of course, we had
to have a Racing Theme to match! I've included a preliminary flyer
for you to mark the date in your diary before you put it up on your
noticeboard at work so everyone knows where to be on August 24th,
2002.
As you can see
by the "Form Guide", the programme is packed and varied with some
of the day split into Concurrent Sessions covering both Clinical
and Management Issues. This is aimed to suit all Day Surgery nurses
from those new to Day Surgery through to those who have been around
a little longer!!!
